Course Syllabus
- TITLE OF COURSE: PE1531 - Canoeing
- COURSE DESCRIPTION: One credit hour. Two hours lab per week. This course will cover the techniques and principles of canoeing during a 10-day trip on the Current River in Missouri. Canoe safety, strokes, white-water canoeing, and canoe camping will be included. For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.
- PROGRAM AND DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT: The SCCC/ATS physical education program will broaden the understanding of fitness for life by providing general education, appropriate technology, and professional development opportunities that promote a healthy lifestyle.

- SCCC/ATS OUTCOMES: Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate the ability to do the following SCCC/ATS Outcomes.

- COURSE OUTCOMES: To successfully complete the class the student should:
- Be able to demonstrate proper care of a canoe and paddles.
- Be able to demonstrate basic cruising strokes.
- Be able to carry or portage a canoe.
- Be able to launch, load, board, and cast off correctly.
- Be able to maneuver the canoe in a safe manner with the proper safety equipment in place.
- Be able to utilize safety equipment such as vests and ropes in a proper manner.
- Be able to demonstrate safe canoeing techniques as suggested by the National Park Service.
- Be able to store canoes and paddles correctly on shore.
- Be able to demonstrate basic cruising strokes such as bow strokes, J. stroke, guide and
Canadian stroke.
- Be able to portage canoes around snags and unsafe water conditions.
- Be able to follow a trip plan.
- Be able to wear and have available gear and clothing for changing water conditions
- Be able to interpret maps of the trip plan.

- METHODS OF ASSESSMENT:
- SCCC/ATS Outcome #1 will be assessed and measured by testing.
- SCCC/ATS Outcome #2 will be assessed and measured by testing, projects, and reflection papers
- SCCC/ATS Outcome #3 will be assessed and measured by group discussions.
- SCCC/ATS Outcome #5 will be assessed and measured by the student successfully navigating the
60-mile trip down the Current River.
- SCCC/ATS Outcome #6 will be assessed and measured by the student correctly demonstrating basic
strokes, portage, launching, use of safety equipment, loading, boarding, cast off, and completion of the planned trip in a safe manner.
- SCCC/ATS Outcome #7 will be assessed and measured by interpersonal interactions with students,
instructors and local community members in the areas of travel for this class.
- SCCC/ATS Outcome #9 will be assessed and measured by instructor evaluation.
